Brian's First Marathon

Brian trained all spring for his first full marathon.  He would do super early long runs on Saturday mornings and we would meet him at various destinations around town - usually local donut shops around 8:30 at the end of his 15 or 20 miles.  We would chow down on donuts and then drive him home.  Worked great for his waistline, but not so much for mine!  

He began to really love those long runs and looked forward to them.  He was making great time too.  However, when race day came along, the weather was abnormally hot.  It was a muggy 85 degrees out.  He had only trained in cold or chilly weather, and boy did it take its toll on him and all the runners on race day.

It started in north Lexington at the Fasig Tipton horse auction/farm.  It is so beautiful.  

Although we didn't see him start, we did find a great shady spot to camp out where we could see him at mile 11 and 22 and then rush to the end to see him finish.  It was fun to cheer on the runners and chat with others watching.
Although Brian might not like that I posted this shirtless photo - he tossed his shirt at mile 11 and then picked it back up to finish at mile 22.  Without going into TMI, let's just say chaffing and sweat make for many issues, so shirtless it is.
Here he is closing in on the finish line around 4:45.  It was a long and hot run and probably at least an hour slower because of heat, but he did it!  Grant ran the final section with him.  He was feeling pretty miserable at this point.



Brian was sore, but happy.  His feet were pretty much trashed.  He had blisters on every single toe!  He took the week off of running to let his body heal.

We are very proud of Brian and his desire to do things that challenge him.  He's made lots of positive changes in his health and is a great example to our family.  We are naturally more lazy than he is, but it is a nice balance.  He pushes us to be better and we push him to take time to relax.  Somewhere in the middle it all comes together.

Brian took this picture of a bridge competition that was going on at the conference center.  That is a lot of bridge players! While Brian was conferencing, we ventured out in our car to the Science Center across town.  It was awesome!  We loved the interactive displays and things to do.  It was way, way fun. This frog is the cutest, saddest, frog I've ever seen.  He was so adorable. Haley loves turtles! We tried some Pizza Pizza for lunch in the cafeteria.  Not bad! This wooden slide was awesome in their little forest.  Grant went flying down it like a rocket.  Once he didn't get his footing right to stop and he kept on flying.  It was sooo funny.  He had a little bum rash from the slide, but was okay. Aquarium & CN Tower

The next morning, we walked over to the Aquarium and beat the crowds.  It was a really cool aquarium - better than we expected.   Our favorite part was the tube that you could walk through.  This big sea creature was just sitting on the top of the tube.  It was so cool to check him out and to see all the sharks everywhere.  You really get a good look at all their crazy shark teeth when you are below them!   After lunch, we headed for an afternoon swim at the hotel pool. Then we headed over to St. Lawrence Market and met Brian for dinner.  I got fish and chips, Grant got homemade ravioli, Haley got chinese and Brian got perogies.  Everyone was happy!  It was fun to walk around the market. Dearborn, Michigan

On our way to another conference in Toronto, we stopped over outside of Detroit in Dearborn, Michigan - where the Ford headquarters are.  We stayed at the historic Dearborn Inn, which Henry Ford designed, and is now managed by Marriott, and went to the Henry Ford Museum.   There are tons of Ford factories, offices, test tracks and museums all over...but man, do they need to pave their roads!  They were full of potholes everywhere.  Poor Detroit/Dearborn.  Hopefully they can pave someday soon.   Brian and I had been to the museum before, but it has been over 20 years for me...and they had changed quite a bit.  It was fun to walk around and look at all of the neat cars, trains, airplanes and other equipment.    This is the original oscar myer hotdog mobile.   This is the actual bus - not a replica - of the bus in Montgomery Alabama where Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus.  Grant is sitting in her ...
