Surprise Adventure
Saturday we wanted to head out to a new place for a hike, but weren't sure where. Brian saw online that the Fish and Wildlife headquarters seemed to have some nice trails over in Frankfort so we grabbed the address and headed out. Well, come to find out - they DO have some nice trails, and a whole lot more...plus when we showed up we realized that it just happened to be national hunting and fishing day so the place was packed with lots of extra people and things to do. So, our little hike turned into so much more and we had a blast! We really aren't hunters or fishers, but hey, when in Rome...
We checked out the nature museum,
then headed outside where we found a bald eagle and a ton of other animals - I'm talking fish, elk, buffalo, wildcats and more!
They even had a bear. A bear!! I have been to a zillion zoos, but I have yet to see a bear. He was awesome! I might have found my new favorite animal.
Huge catfish, just like Cabellas :)
Eventually we made it to our hike.
Haley's bum had a special visitor.
After the hike we joined in the festivities. The kids tried their hands at archery.
I harnessed my inner Katniss Everdeen and gave the flying disks a go. I haven't shot an aarow since my days as camp counselor in Maine. I loved it! (even though I misssed every one)
You gotta love it when life exceeds your expectations. We'll definately be back to visit my new bear friend and hike more hikes. Also, for local friends - this place is 100% free until next March when they are going to start charging an entrace fee. I see a fun playdate in our future!
