Charlottesville Virginia

If you know me, you know I love a good road trip!  So, when Brian had a quick one day conference in Charlottesville, Virginia you know I had to tag along.  We took the kids out of school Thursday and drove over through our old Virginia stomping grounds.  While Brian was in his conference on Friday, the kids and I took off for Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.

Try as I might to get them excited, Grant was less than impressed.  He was still in crazyville from being sick all week.  Oh well.  That happens.  I kept telling myself during the whole tour that I'll never see any of these people again, so who cares that they are judging me and my crazy son's behavior.  Haley learned a few things and now the kids can say they've been to the house on the nickle.  Woo hoo.  Luckily, I have been there before (sans children) and had already seen all I wanted to see, so I was able to be more laid back about their lack of interest.

After some lunch I decided that the rest of the day would best be spent at the pool.  I read a great book and let them swim and swim and swim their brains out and happiness returned.

Later that night with Brian, we went out to eat at a great pizza place and headed to a yummy frozen custard shop.  Some enjoyed the experience more than others.  Guess who?

Tired, sad Grant.  It is hard to be 6 sometimes.
We drove home on Saturday, my birthday.  Our favorite book fair in Harrisburg was going on that weekend so we stopped and had a great time!  Love that place!  As we got thinking about it we realized that we hadn't been there in probably 9 years.  ...And then we both felt really, really old because only old people can remember things 10 years ago and not have been in college or high school.  At any rate, it was a great way to start my birthday. 

Then we drove home, stopping at Sheetz, our favorite road trip lunch spot.  It is like Wawa in Delaware, which I love too.  I know I'm a cheap date, but I really love a good sub - so this is where I wanted to stop for my birthday lunch - a gas station.  Plus, I figured we just went out to eat for 2 days so I was good!   Brian got his mega soda and it is tradition to get mallo cups for dessert.  We have this down to a science.  We are classy people.

All in all, it was a fun weekend.  Southern Virginia will always have a soft spot in my heart.  We loved living there and it was nice to enjoy the beauty of it again.

Happy birthday! I'm with you--any excuse for a road trip, I am THERE. I love seeing new, interesting places plus old favorites. It's awesome. Sorry Grant could have had a better time, but at least you got a few Happy Grants here and there. Whew. Monticello looks pretty cool! I love your little traditions (mallow cup, etc.) So stinkin' cute.

I think I want a mallow cup. Glad you had a fun road trip, and that you were recovered enough to enjoy it. I was surprised to see all that snow at Monticello. It makes that indoor pool look even more appealing.

Science Center & Niagara Falls

Brian took this picture of a bridge competition that was going on at the conference center.  That is a lot of bridge players! While Brian was conferencing, we ventured out in our car to the Science Center across town.  It was awesome!  We loved the interactive displays and things to do.  It was way, way fun. This frog is the cutest, saddest, frog I've ever seen.  He was so adorable. Haley loves turtles! We tried some Pizza Pizza for lunch in the cafeteria.  Not bad! Aquarium & CN Tower

The next morning, we walked over to the Aquarium and beat the crowds.  It was a really cool aquarium - better than we expected.   Our favorite part was the tube that you could walk through.  This big sea creature was just sitting on the top of the tube.  It was so cool to check him out and to see all the sharks everywhere.  You really get a good look at all their crazy shark teeth when you are below them!   After lunch, we headed for an afternoon swim at the hotel pool. Then we headed over to St. Lawrence Market and met Brian for dinner.  I got fish and chips, Grant got homemade ravioli, Haley got chinese and Brian got perogies.  Everyone was happy!  It was fun to walk around the market. Next, we headed over the CN tower as a family.  It's a very high way up! The glass floor was super crazy to walk on.  It made me so nervous!  Man, that is a long way down! ...

Dearborn, Michigan

On our way to another conference in Toronto, we stopped over outside of Detroit in Dearborn, Michigan - where the Ford headquarters are.  We stayed at the historic Dearborn Inn, which Henry Ford designed, and is now managed by Marriott, and went to the Henry Ford Museum.   There are tons of Ford factories, offices, test tracks and museums all over...but man, do they need to pave their roads!  They were full of potholes everywhere.  Poor Detroit/Dearborn.  Hopefully they can pave someday soon.   Brian and I had been to the museum before, but it has been over 20 years for me...and they had changed quite a bit.  It was fun to walk around and look at all of the neat cars, trains, airplanes and other equipment.    This is the original oscar myer hotdog mobile.   This is the actual bus - not a replica - of the bus in Montgomery Alabama where Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus.  Grant is sitting in her ...
